.Net 4.0 - Start Reading Between the Lines – Learn Silverlight and Entity Framework

I started writing this as a general recap of PDC for team members but the more I thought about what was announced at PDC, the longer the email got.  Ultimately I decided to put it out so you dear reader could also gain some insight from things announced at PDC.  For starters listen to the podcast we recorded with Scott Guthrie or “The Gu”, or “His Guness”, or “ScottGu” about Silverlight 4 announcements among other things while at PDC.  The big stories out of PDC that I think everyone should take note of are Silverlight 4, Entity Framework 4 and...

Change Group Policy - How To Change Screen Save Time Out in Registry

Before I start this post let me say that if you follow what I’ve outlined below and it doesn’t work, don’t call me! I did this to my virtual machine and it “works on my machine”.  My virtual machine is managed by group policy at work.  Every 5 minutes the screen locks and I have to log back into the machine.  It is the most annoying thing in the world.  Thus, this is my fix for it.  Also note that I work at home and am not physically in the office.  Since I am the only one that has access...

How to Get Table Sizes in SQL Server

Before I get old and forget this little trick I thought I’d blog it. I’m sure someone else out here on the Internets can use it as well.  Especially if you are hosting your database on a hosting company that charges you by the MB and you want to know how much space you are taking up.  Hope it helps. EXEC sp_MSforeachtable @command1="EXEC sp_spaceused '?'" Here is a sample of what it returns.

http://deepfriedbytes.com/podcast/episode-40-silverlight-4-and-behind-the-scenes-at-pdc-2009-with-scott-guthrie/     What better way to find out what is going on in .Net development than to get it straight from The Gu himself?  We were invited back to PDC 2009 to cover all of the announcements and get the scoop on what the future is for Microsoft developers. We sit down with Scott Guthrie, Corporate Vice President of the .Net Developer Platform, and discuss the future of the web and especially Silverlight 4 and ASP.NET Webforms/MVC. We also discuss some interesting behind the scene moments of PDC.  But the most important question is what is The Gu's favorite fried food?...

I Don’t Get The Hype - Google Wave is Discussion Forums Web 2.0

I’ve been using Google Wave for several weeks now, and I just don’t get it.  All Google Wave appears to be is discussion forums Web 2.0’ified.  Oh, and then inverted.  What I mean by inverted is typically in a discussion forum you have to join in a discussion, usually by joining in on the site or whatever.  Think of it like at a party where some people are discussing topic X.  You want to participate so you walk over and join in.  With Wave, you are “pulled” over into the discussion (like an email forward). Both forums and wave have...

Eye Surgery Update

A lot of people keep asking me about my eye so I thought I’d give an update so I can keep things “DRY” (don’t repeat yourself).  I obviously haven’t been blogging much lately, and the episodes of the podcast have been hard to get out (although we got one out first of the week). When you can’t see very well you don’t feel like “playing” on the computer.  It is just a constant reminder.  I basically go to work and that is as much as I can stand in front of the computer.  Oh, and by the way, white backgrounds...

Running WCF Service in IIS on Windows 7 Error: no svc MIME Type

This evening I deployed a Silverlight application to my local machine while trying to debug a security / authorization issue.  I setup a quick web application in IIS7 on a fairly fresh new version of Windows 7.  When I opened the page for the service I was presented with the following. I went in and looked at the MIME types in IIS7 and sure enough, there wasn’t a .svc MIME type.  If you, dear reader, just installed Windows 7 (or Vista) and run into this same issue here is the fix.  It is easy.  Go to the following path and run...
